How it Works: U.S. Navy Method

This tool uses the **U.S. Navy Method**, a widely accepted formula for estimating body fat percentage. It uses measurements of height, neck circumference, waist circumference (and hip circumference for women).

How to Measure

  • 1 Neck: Below larynx (Adam's apple), tape perpedicular to neck.
  • 2 Waist (Men): At navel level.
  • 3 Waist (Women): At the narrowest point (above navel).
  • 4 Hip (Women): At the widest point of hips/buttocks.

Why Track Body Fat?

Better Than Weight

Body fat percentage gives a truer picture of your body composition and fitness than scale weight alone.

Health Risk Assessment

High body fat is correlated with chronic diseases, while too low can also be dangerous.

Fitness Goals

Tailor your diet and training (Tracking cutting vs bulking phases) accurately.

FAQ

Is this calculator accurate?
The U.S. Navy Method is widely considered one of the most accurate non-clinical methods, usually within 1-3% accuracy if measurements are taken correctly.
Why is my Body Fat different from BMI?
BMI only considers weight and height, failing to distinguish muscle from fat. You can have a high BMI but low body fat (muscle) or normal BMI but high fat ("skinny fat").
I look thin but have high body fat?
This is often called "Skinny Fat". It means you have low muscle mass. Resistance training is recommended to build muscle and improve composition.
When is the best time to measure?
Measure in the morning, fasting, after using the restroom. Consistency is key for tracking progress.
